Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thankgiving, everyone! I celebrated by spending 5 hours in class and going to the library.

Yesterday, though, Catie and I made a big dinner for her flatmates. They all enjoyed it, and we had a good time. It was, in fact, a really good dinner, which surprised me. I was just waiting for the entire plan to collapse. It also means I got to have leftovers for dinner! Yay for not having to cook for the next few days or so!

I have also rediscovered Beowulf. I picked it up in the library this evening and started to read it again (fifth time, I believe). I haven't enjoyed reading this much in months! Seriously, you all should read it. But read the Seamus Heaney translation. It's incredibly engaging. I read 25 pages in an hour, and it's only 100 pages long. You ought to read it. I'm also planning on going to see the new movie this weekend, so I'll let you know what I think of it. I've heard from a lot of people who know way more about Beowulf than I do that it completely and utterly sucks, though, so my hopes aren't high. Anyway, the poem is excellent, and easy to read.

They don't celebrate the pilgrim's exploitation of Natives in Europe do they? isn't there some equivalent holiday though on some different date? I discovered another good british band--the rakes--today. It seems the british have better taste in music...

oh, I also heard Beowulf is really hilarious, albeit unintentionally. Like the scene where he's fighting the dragon nude, and they use all these ludricous props to preserve his modesty, like in Austin Powers (though you probably haven't seen Austin powers)

Links, dear, and Wikipedia. How do you not know what Hadrian's Wall is? It's a wall, that the Emperor Hadrian set up, to keep the Scots out.

That's about what I heard about the movie, too. I may just go later this week, out of contractual lit-geek obligation. Then again, I may not. I don't know why they'd have him fight the dragon nude, though. He takes an oath to fight Grendel without sword or shield, but he's some 70+ years old when he fights the dragon.

And I saw one Austin Powers movie, in Spanish IV. I think we were engaging in the ever-edifying activity of making pinatas, again. It was clever at times, but mostly worthless.

Sadly, much of literature doesn't translate well to film. Haven't seen the movie either but probably will if only to find out for myself.
